David & Riya | Valleta, Malta
Let's talk about three days in Malta that we are genuinely still thinking about.
Not because it was over the top, though it was. Not because the locations were breathtaking, though they absolutely were. But because Riya and David somehow pulled off something incredibly rare, a wedding that felt completely like them, all three versions of them. Indian. Swedish. Hong Kong. And none of it felt like a checklist. It felt like a family.
Three days. Three cultures. One ancient island. Let's get into it.
The first night was a welcome party, and it set the tone immediately. Pergolas and old trees did the work of keeping the June heat at bay while guests wandered, drinks in hand, taking each other in, doing that beautiful thing that happens at destination weddings where strangers become friends somewhere between the first hors d'oeuvre and the second cocktail. Then the dancing started. And like most things this weekend, it went well into the night and nobody complained once.
Night two was something else entirely. A full disco party. Dinner was served, and then the wedding party took the floor with choreographed dances that were sharp, joyful, and clearly the result of serious dedication. The kind of performances that make a room erupt. That night earned every bit of the energy it gave back. The details, the laughter, the dancing, all of it a reminder that the best weddings don't just have a ceremony, they have a build. And this one was building toward something.
Then came day three.
We don't throw the word "unforgettable" around lightly. But standing inside a castle that once belonged to the Knights of Malta, watching the Barratt begin, this ancient, joyful procession winding through stone corridors that have stood for centuries, it hits differently. The procession moved through the castle, climbed upward, and emerged onto the rooftop, where the ceremony waited. The sky above Malta, the stone beneath their feet, and Riya and David at the center of all of it.
The Barratt itself broke from tradition in the best way. The bride was part of the procession, not waiting at the end of it. And when it was over, everyone moved down into the dining hall, beautifully lit for the dinner that followed. Then the band. Then the dancing. Then an after party held even further underground, deeper into the castle, a DJ echoing through walls that have seen a few things in their time and probably nothing quite like this. We had the privilege of working with the brilliant Chris J. Evans on photo, and as always, Chris brought exactly what you want from a shooter at a wedding like this, presence without intrusion, artistry without ego. What we documented together tells the complete story of these three days, every cultural thread, every quiet moment, every eruption of joy.
What stayed with us most wasn't any single moment, though there were plenty. It was the way everything coexisted. The warmth of an Indian celebration. The cool elegance of a Scandinavian sensibility. The cosmopolitan spirit of people who call Hong Kong home. Malta held all of it inside its ancient walls without blinking.
Riya and David, thank you for letting us be part of something this layered and this alive. Malta, you incredible, impossible place, we'll be back.
